A lively performance that centers the lives and voices of the Al Ghawazi (Arabic: الغوازي:belly dancers/performers), followed by a moderated discussion and chance to meet people.
In 1834 the Al Ghawazi were banned from Cairo to Upper Egypt and labelled by Orientalist, Colonial and Islamist literature as “immoral”: a stigma that still follows belly dancers (of all genders) across the SWANA region today. This show resists that stigma through art, memory, laughter and resistance.
The performance is created and performed by Samar Zughool (she), Rula Hummada (she), Behnaz Aliesfahanipour (she/they) and Manar Abed (she) from the SIDE art collective (migrant womxn: cooking, cleaning, politics, cultures & arts).
What to expect:
• Storytelling, movement, collaborative and interdisciplinary practice tracing gendered, intersectional and migration experiences.
• A moderated conversation on migration, gender equality and integration.
