Antonín Dvořák: Stabat Mater, Op. 58, B 71

The roots of the Brno Philharmonic date back to the 1870s, when the young Leoš Janáček aspired to establish a Czech symphony orchestra in his hometown. In doing so, he successfully laid the foundations for outstanding symphonic music in the Moravian region. The modern Brno Philharmonic was born in 1956 from the merger of two existing orchestras in the city and quickly established itself as one of the largest and most important Czech orchestras. The orchestra has performed around a thousand concerts across Europe, the United States, South America, and the Middle and Far East.

They often join forces with the Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno, a choir synonymous with excellence in choral music not only in the Czech Republic but worldwide. The musicians have recorded numerous albums and received several prestigious awards, including the Echo Klassik and the German Record Critics’ Award.

Leoš Svárovský is a versatile and accomplished conductor with a broad repertoire and extensive concert activity. For this tour of the Brno orchestra and choir, along with top Czech soloists, he prepares an authentic performance of Antonín Dvořák’s moving oratorio Stabat Mater. Its immense success following its 1882 premiere—conducted by none other than Leoš Janáček, the godfather of the Brno Philharmonic—catapulted Dvořák to the ranks of the world’s leading composers.
